Medical tourism hits New Zealand

Americans requiring complex surgery will be able to have operations in

New Zealand after the launch of a Kiwi medical tourism company.

Medtral was set up late last year to attract uninsured Americans or those looking for a cheaper option for surgery to come to New Zealand.

The company, whose creator is New Zealand obstetrician and gynaecologist Edward Watson,

will initially do surgery in private Auckland hospitals but aims to expand to Wellington and Christchurch within about five years.

It intends to do up to 1000 complex operations a year on United States medical tourists over the next next five years, but says the surgery on foreigners will not mean Kiwis miss out.

More than 100,000 private surgeries are done every year in New Zealand.

Watson is in the US seeking business.

Medtral director Andrew Wong, who is also chief executive of Auckland's MercyAscot private hospital, said the company would soon operate on its first patients.

One patient is Eugene Horn, of Williamina, Oregon, who needs both knees replaced at a cost of $US200,000 ($NZ216,000).

Hip Replacement Surgery

A hip pain severely affects one’s ability to lead a life actively. Over the last few years, there have been major advancements in hip replacement improving the surgery outcome greatly. Total hip replacement is a treatment to all kinds of hip arthritis, improving thequality of life of patients who undergo the operation. There are two major types of artificial hip replacements - Cemented Prosthesis and the Uncemented Prosthesis. Both types of prosthesis are widely used.

Each prosthesis is made up of two parts

  • The acetabular component, or socket portion, which replaces the acetabulum.
  • The femoral component or stem portion, which replaces te femoral head.

The femoral component is made of a metal stem with a metal ball on the end. Some prosthesis have a metal head on upper end attached to the metal stem. The acetabular component is a metal shell with a plastic inner liner that acts like a bearing. The type of plastic used is highly cross linked ultra high molecule weight Polyethylene which is wear resistant.

  • Patient's Experiences Hip Resurfacing Surgery BY Mr James S

Mr James S from USA, speaks about his experience of getting Hip Resurfacing Surgery done at Wockhardt Hip resurfacing Center - a state of the art facility at South Asia's First Internationally Accredited Superspecialty Hospital at Mumbai. As associate hospital of Harvard Medical International (HMI), Boston, USA, this hospital is equipped with latest technology, multi-disciplinarycapability, world class infrastructure and excellent patient care ambience and processes. Hip resurfacing or surface replacement arthroplasty is a bone-conserving alternative to conventional total hip replacement (THR). Unlike THR, hip resurfacing does not involve the removal of the femoral head and neck; hence the head, neck and femur bone is preserved in an effort to facilitate future surgery to enable the patient to take advantage of newer technology or treatments in the future. The current generation of hip resurfacing devices utilizes a metal-metal bearing.

Hip Resurfacing in INDIA (Cost Savings )

Hip Resurfacing is anatomically and biomechanically more similar to the natural hip joint resulting in increased stability, flexibility and range of motion. Further, dislocation risk is virtually eliminated. Higher activity levels are typically achieved with less risk. These benefits are realized because the head diameter that results from Resurfacing is very similar to the patient's normal head diameter and these larger head sizes are typically much larger than the femoral balls utilized in conventional THR.

    Advantages of Hip Resurfacing :

    1. Allows the patient to squat and sit on the floor safely
    2. Allows a normal range of movement and sporting activities after operation
    3. Sacrifices only the diseased bone and preserves normal bone
    4. Restores the normal structures of the hip
    5. More natural feel after surgery
    6. Early rehabilitation
    7. Easy to revise if needed
    8. Less risk of dislocation
    9. No leg length alteration

While significant cost differences exist between India and the USA, UK and other developed countries,

the quality of medical treatment is definitely the determining factor.

India not only provides affordable medical treatment but also provides quality medical services

and world-class infrastructure that are at par with advanced countries.

Hip Resurfacing - One Side (Not Available in US ) Surgery Charges – $8,000 All prices are indicative and may vary depending upon the exchange rate at the time of admission to the hospital.

However, by earning accreditations, standardizing medical practices, and getting government, hospitals and tourism agencies, India can increase its medical tourism industry to $2.2 billion per year. The wide use of alternative medicine makes India a particularly intriguing destination, and India can bill itself as a holistic health solution.
