How to MEDICAL TOURISM Know about :What Happens During Surgery?

First, the surgical team will give you medicine so you won't feel pain (anesthesia). The medicine may block the pain only in one part of the body (regional), or it may put your whole body to sleep (general). The team will then replace the damaged joint with a prosthesis.

Each surgery is different. How long it takes depends on how badly the joint is damaged and how the surgery is done. To replace a knee or a hip takes about 2 hours or less, unless there are complicating factors. After surgery, you will be moved to a recovery room for 1 to 2 hours until you are fully awake or the numbness goes away.

How to MEDICAL TOURISM Know about :Do I Need to Have My Joint Replaced?

Only a doctor can tell if you need a joint replaced. He or she will look at your joint with an x-ray machine or other machines. The doctor may put a small, lighted tube (arthroscope) into your joint to look for damage. A small sample of your tissue could also be tested.

After looking at your joint, the doctor may say that you should consider exercise, walking aids like braces or canes, physical therapy, or medicines and supplements. Medicines for arthritis include drugs that reduce inflammation. Depending on the type of arthritis, the doctor may prescribe corticosteroids or other drugs. However, all drugs may cause side effects, including bone loss.

If these treatments do not work, the doctor may suggest an operation called an osteotomy (aas-tee-AAHT-oh-me), where the surgeon "aligns" the joint. Here, the surgeon cuts the bone or bones around the joint to improve alignment. This may be simpler than replacing a joint, but it may take longer to recover. However, it is not commonly done today.

Joint replacement is often the answer if you have constant pain and can't move the joint well; for example, if you have trouble with things like walking, climbing stairs, and taking a bath.

How to MEDICAL TOURISM Know about :What Is a New Joint Like?

A new joint, called a prosthesis (praas-THEE-sis), can be made of plastic, metal, or both. It may be cemented into place or not cemented, so that your bone will grow into it. Both methods may be combined to keep the new joint in place.

Illustration of an artificial hip joint

A cemented joint is used more often in older people who do not move around as much and in people with "weak" bones. The cement holds the new joint to the bone. An uncemented joint is often recommended for younger, more active people and those with good bone quality. It may take longer to heal, because it takes longer for bone to grow and attach to it.

New joints generally last at least 10 to 15 years. Therefore, younger patients may need to have the same damaged joint replaced more than once.

How to MEDICAL TOURISM Know about :What Is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Joint replacement surgery is removing a damaged joint and putting in a new one. A joint is where two or more bones come together, like the knee, hip, and shoulder. The surgery is usually done by a doctor called an orthopaedic (or-tho-PEE-dik) surgeon. Sometimes, the surgeon will not remove the whole joint, but will only replace or fix the damaged parts

The doctor may suggest a joint replacement to improve how you live. Replacing a joint can help you relieve pain and move and feel better. Joints that can be replaced include the shoulders, fingers, ankles, and elbows. Hips and knees are replaced most often.
What Can Happen to My Joints?

Joints can be damaged by arthritis and other diseases, injuries, or other causes. Arthritis or simply years of use may cause the joint to wear away. This can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling. Bones are alive, and need blood to be healthy, grow, and repair themselves. Diseases and damage inside a joint can limit blood flow, causing problems.

Singapore Night Safari

When Night Safari was inaugurated in Singapore in 1994, it was the first of its kind in the world. The overwhelming popularity of the night tours conducted at the zoo gave impetus to the concept of Night Safari. Nestled in a 40 hectare expanse, the park closely resembles the natural habitat of the animals in the park and is a home to over 1000 animals belonging to around 100 different species. 90% of tropical animals are nocturnal and most active after dusk and it is hence a good idea to catch up with the nocturnal activities of these animals during night. The Safari Park is lit by subtle moonglow lighting to enable the visitors to view the animals.

The Safari Park has been divided into 8 distinctive zones and you can explore the Park either by walking or by taking a tram. The tram ride takes you through the East and West loop passing by a large reservoir and weaving through selected habitats designed specially to replicate the natural environment from the Himalayan Foothills to the Southeast Asian Rainforest and Indian Subcontinent. The walking trials include the Fishing Cat, Forest Giants and Leopard Trail. The Fishing Cat Trails houses fishing cats, barking deer, gharials, ferocious leopard cat, small clawed otters and the Malaysian flying fox which is the largest bat in the world. The Leopard Trail houses leopards, loris, tarsiers and owls. In the Mangrove Trail, one can see various kinds of flying bats. The Forest Giants Trail is a walk through the rainforests where you can spot fling lemurs, bats and snakes. This trail is a botanical display of awesome forest giants, some of which have been there for over hundred years. The exhibits are visible from 41 foot when you choose to walk and from a height of 18 feet if you choose to use the tram

Medical tourism hits New Zealand

Americans requiring complex surgery will be able to have operations in

New Zealand after the launch of a Kiwi medical tourism company.

Medtral was set up late last year to attract uninsured Americans or those looking for a cheaper option for surgery to come to New Zealand.

The company, whose creator is New Zealand obstetrician and gynaecologist Edward Watson,

will initially do surgery in private Auckland hospitals but aims to expand to Wellington and Christchurch within about five years.

It intends to do up to 1000 complex operations a year on United States medical tourists over the next next five years, but says the surgery on foreigners will not mean Kiwis miss out.

More than 100,000 private surgeries are done every year in New Zealand.

Watson is in the US seeking business.

Medtral director Andrew Wong, who is also chief executive of Auckland's MercyAscot private hospital, said the company would soon operate on its first patients.

One patient is Eugene Horn, of Williamina, Oregon, who needs both knees replaced at a cost of $US200,000 ($NZ216,000).

There are two major types of artificial hip replacements - Cemented Prosthesis and the Uncemented Prosthesis. Both types of prosthesis are widely used.

  • The femoral component or stem portion, which replaces te femoral head.

The femoral component is made of a metal stem with a metal ball on the end. Some prosthesis have a metal head on upper end attached to the metal stem. • Patient's Experiences Hip Resurfacing Surgery BY Mr James S

Mr James S from USA, speaks about his experience of getting Hip Resurfacing Surgery done at Wockhardt Hip resurfacing Center - a state of the art facility at South Asia's First Internationally Accredited Superspecialty Hospital at Mumbai. As associate hospital of Harvard Medical International (HMI), Boston, USA, this hospital is equipped with latest technology, multi-disciplinarycapability, world class infrastructure and excellent patient care ambience and processes. Hip resurfacing or surface replacement arthroplasty is a bone-conserving alternative to conventional total hip replacement (THR). Unlike THR, hip resurfacing does not involve the removal of the femoral head and neck; hence the head, neck and femur bone is preserved in an effort to facilitate future surgery to enable the patient to take advantage of newer technology or treatments in the future. The current generation of hip resurfacing devices utilizes a metal-metal bearing.
