The latest in Asia

The latest in AsiaMedical science is forever changing, and changing for the better. Newer methods that guarantee more efficacy are being invented on a huge scale and any nation that hopes to attract medical tourists simply has to be proficient and technologically adept at all times.

MEDICAL TRAVEL Singapore approached Dr Andrew Khoo, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Aesthetic & Reconstructive Centre (a member of the Pacific Healthcare group of healthcare institutions in Singapore).

Dr Khoo explained the many new techniques in the field of invasive as well as non-invasive aesthetic enhancement .The most recent invasive therapy to hit the market is VASER Liposelection that betters liposuction by reducing any damages done to important tissues, nerves or blood vessels during the process; it also gives optimal recovery and efficient results. “Liposuction has been made more effective, particularly in the more difficult to treat areas like the buttock, thigh, chest and back by the advent of VASER liposelection,” says Dr Khoo. “This is a technique where ultrasound energy is used to dissolve the fat prior to liposuction allowing more efficient removal of fat with less discomfort to the patient.” Another novel way of invasive treatment is the use of ratcheted threads, which are threads with tiny hooks on them. “These allow us to achieve facelifts, brow lifts and neck lifts without resorting to extensive surgery,” says Dr Khoo.

Hip Replacement Surgery gets affordable

A total hip procedure costs £7000 to £9000 in UKBut a hip replacement surgery in India costs £3,700 or lessPlus, you get treated by world-renowned doctors in internationally accredited hospitals. Your package could even include a short vacation in scenic Indian backwaters. Medical tourism for orthopedics is catching up big time in countries like India, Singapore, Thailand and Philippines. And affordable costs are just one of the myriad reasons for it.Hip arthritis is a painful condition caused by the friction in the ball and socket joint between the thigh and pelvis bone. This occurs due to the wear and tear on the cartilage lining over the years. Patients with this type of arthritis are unable to sleep at night because of the pain and get little or no relief from pain medications. Patients also experience difficulty walking up or down stairs. In short, the quality of life goes down as patients no longer enjoy simple pleasures like walking.

LASIK - Asia eyes for more medical tourists

The inflow of medical tourists to countries like India, Singapore, Philippines and Thailand is at an all time high. And these travelers are choosing these Asian destinations for procedures like the LASIK. The abundance of accredited medical facilities, qualified health care professionals and the affordability factor play a key role in promoting this trend.LASIK or Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis is a 30-minute healthcare procedure used to treat vision problems due to nearsightedness. LASIK is a very popular vision correction procedure and involves making a surgical incision in the cornea. The patient is given numbing drops, after which a suction ring is placed over the eye. The surgeon cuts a small flap in the center of the cornea using a knife called a microkeratome and folds this back to create an opening. The laser is then directed inside the eye, vaporizing the tissue and reshaping the cornea for accurate focusing. The lasering actually lasts about just 30-60 seconds only. The flap is then replaced. The healing process is a lot faster in LASIK. This procedure reduces a person%u2019s dependency on glasses and contact lenses and thereby improves the quality of life.

Singapore Medical Team In Myanmar Returns Home

The Singapore medical relief team returns home after a two-week stint in Myanmar and having treated some 3,800 patients. Since it began operations on 22 May 2008, the 13-man Ministry of Health team of 4 doctors, 8 nurses and a pharmacist technician from 8 public hospitals and institutions had attended to patients with respiratory ailments, skin infections, and gastroenteritis. Working under a unified Singapore Team, they had combined efforts and resources with the Singapore Red Cross and Mercy Relief team members already on-site, and had worked very closely with the local doctors and nurses.
The team was based in the township of Twan Te, an hour’s drive from Yangon. The initial medical coverage in the Twan Te area was later expanded to cyclone-hit victims in the Kayin Chaung area, (an hour’s boat ride from Twan Te) which was previously inaccessible and without any medical service. The team is gratified that it was able to render its medical service to increasing numbers of patients. From 200 patients a day, the team attended to between 450 and 600 patients a day in the last week of May 2008. Even non-cyclone patients were seeking help from the Singapore medical team for injuries and chronic diseases.
Some of the challenges faced by the team included mental and physical fatigue from the heavy patient workload, and the tough working and living conditions. The combined Singapore Team of 22 volunteers is expected to arrive at Changi Airport at 9pm, 5 June 2008.

World Class Healthcare

Singapore made world headlines when a team of doctors and medical professionals successfully separated Nepalese twins, Ganga and Jamuna, who were joined at the head, in an unprecedented operation that lasted more than 90 hours in April 2001. This is one of many breakthroughs in healthcare that have placed Singapore on the world medical map.

As a leading healthcare services hub in the region, more than 200,000 international patients come to Singapore each year for a whole range of medical care. Some come for health screening, others for eye, heart and brain surgeries. Yet others come for cancer treatment. Whether their needs are basic or complex, patients will find assurance in a world-class healthcare system that emphasises safety and pushes the boundaries of excellence.

There are two categories of health tourism:

There are two categories of health tourism

1. Medical Tourism - Medical tourism includes minor surgery and regular health checkups like dental care, eye surgery, and minor cosmetic check-ups. It’s the destination that is the first choice and while there on holiday tourists prefer to receive such minor treatments. Medical tourism is a niche market and health and wellness holidays are steadily growing into a high value business, with the average cost of a trip well in excess of the holiday market norms. This market is fueled by those looking to break out the pressures of long working hours and what some operators see as an urge to retreat from the debilitating effects of the consumer society.

2. Medical Travel - Medical travel it is for the complete available treatment of major health issues, such as a hip replacement, kidney transplant or open heart surgery, which is the deciding factor. This is what they call elective surgery and it is the quality of care that counts. The excellent medical facility, expert and experienced surgeons, along with state of the art modern medical facilities with latest technology instruments, that too at very cheaper costs, if compared to the treatment charges in U.S. or U.K.

Quality of Care

Don’t think that low prices equal low quality. Quite the contrary. Many of the most advanced medical facilities in the world exist outside of the United States (Medical tourism), with specific programs carefully designed to attract international travelers such as your self. In fact, these hospitals have spent the last decade preparing for the explosive growth of medical tourism, specifically adhering to the same high standards that we in the United States have come to trust.

Medical tourism: Need surgery, will travel

Aruna Thurairajan

A Canadian patient

Across Canada, thousands are on waiting lists for surgeries. In some cases those waits can last for years.

A year ago, Aruna Thurairajan of Calgary was becoming resigned to the idea of living in pain. At the age of 50, a spinal condition was making tasks like reaching over her head impossible.

"I had almost 20 to 40 painkillers a day," she says.

Her doctors in Alberta said there would be a three-year wait for corrective surgery.

"I went over to India... and I had the surgery, " Thurairajan says.

Six weeks later not only could she lift her arm, she could also endorse this cheque from the province of Alberta, reimbursing her for almost the entire cost of the surgery despite the fact it was done in a foreign private hospital.

"I had a legitimate claim, I processed it just the way they wanted, I didn't make any unreasonable demands," she says,

An out of country health services claim is little known, little used. Alberta only had 45 cases last year. It's an option for patients who simply can't get into a hospital quick enough.
